Seems to be the way marketing in the the game industry works. Get the game to the media first, they have time to write/record their (hopefully) glowing review, generating a lot of buzz around the game. "Squee!" you say, as you run your little ass out to get the game on release day. Oh man, those guys in the sales department love to see big numbers on day one! The game jumps to the top of the best-selling and top-rated lists, generating more interest and sales just based on that rank, drawing the attention of people who may have never heard of the game or don't follow gaming media, generating even more sales.

I wonder how much effort it would take to make a convincing enough fake review site to get some games early. Hmmmmm.

It's not that simple, I assure you. ^_^

Another 9/10. From Edge!

Favourite quote: "Co-op turns the campaign into a Laurel and Hardy short, albeit one in which the pair end up skewered, eaten, or torn to pieces."

Hehe...

Far from a review but here is a blurb I wrote up in a gaming forum I go to. Keep in mind, this is taking you into the forum's thread about the XBLA version of Spelunky but does also relate to the PC version as well. I'm far from professional but I was glad to get the positive responses I did garner. I am 'slightly' known as an Indie fanatic, so they expect this sort of thing from me. Oh yeah... the link is here... http://www.veterangamers.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1469.

Much love to the developers of this fine title!

Well you could start getting games early by reviewing super tiny games (like Tyr0vC's game) and then slowly move up to tigsource releases and possibly humble bundle material!

I've been invited to write for a few gaming blogs, but haven't yet had the inclination to do so.
Kinda wishing I'd gotten into it, tho, as I probably could have scored myself some free PAX tickets. :D

PC GAMER JUST NAMED SPELUNKY THE GOTY! It beat other nominees such as Dota 2, Bioshock Infinite, etc. Article here: http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/01/01/game-of-the-year-2013-spelunky/

I guess it's time to go on a mass shooting. The victims? The PC Gamer commenters.

One person said its as unfair as IWBTG. He has obviously not played either game

Cat mario is unfair

Spelunky is totally fair, aside from maybe a bug. Each death is your fault

I can understand about Spelunky being unfair, but how come IWBTG is, it is same level everyone gets.

But seriously I can't believe that Spelunky is GoTY. Am I dreaming?

LOLiLOL, I saw guy named "BlaZo" who said something good about Spelunky.

Are you serious? IWBTG is unfair mechanically as it is unpredictable and unless you have alteady played a section of the game, you wont know what to do. In Spelunky, everything is extremely fair as traps always behave how they are supposed to. Stuff doesnt come out of nowhere and kill you

Fair in the same both are treated equally. I know not the same thing, but similar.

Now I love Spelunky and it is prob my goty for 2013 also, while it is mostly fair and most deaths will be your fault the game absolutely does have cheap deaths. Ice caves I'm looking at you. And you too croc, gtfo!

Spelunky is my GOTY but croc man is definitely an extremely unfair enemy. Telefragging sucks, there is nothing logical, fun or fair about it.

IWBTG and Cat Mario (which is now a misnomer now that Super Mario 3D World's released) are both intended to make the player as frustrated as possible while making it fun to play (I think the sense of humor the game creators have makes it fun).

Spelunky's intended to be a difficult, but addictive game.

Both have different goals than each others, so comparing between the two is like comparing apples to oranges.
