Title: Doukutsu Monogatari
Post by: beatthelastboss on October 11, 2009, 06:54:25 PM
I had heard enough comparisons, my will finally gave out, and I tried this "Doukutsu Monogatari". Apparently, it is very similar to spelunky. Not. At. All.

Doukutsu Monogatari, also known as cave story, has to be one of my favorite freeware games ever now, along with spelunky of course  :D

But, I am afraid the only 2 things they have in common would be:

A. Pixelated Graphics

B. Incredible difficulty at some points.

Both are wonderful games, but not really that similar.

What do you think? Have you ever played it? Am I the only one who HASN'T?

Discuss!

-Boss

P.S. If you haven't check out the best site for cave story resources, including several versions of the game itself:

Well, he is comparing it to Spelunky so in that way it is related, but yes it should be moved there.

On topic, I played Cave Story for the first time maybe six months ago. It very quickly became my favorite game ever! Everything about it is amazingly done, and extremely surprising when you find out a single man made it all from scratch, himself. No, more than a man, Pixel is a demi-god among indy game makers. Don't know what else to say, but, if you haven't played it yet you are surely missing out. Play it. Seriously.

Yeah, "Cave Story" is also one of my favorite games of all time, too.  :D

They both have ghosts!  :o

But the Spelunky ghost is awesomer, because it looks like the Ghostbuster's marshmallow ghost.

Wait, who says that Cave Story and Spelunky are similar?
Both great games (in a cave) yea but... one's action rpg (zelda style) and ones roguelike.

Indeed, I hadn't heard of any such comparisons either.  Regardless, I am bothered by a lot of those situations where Awesome Thingamajig X gets criticized when it is similar to Awesome Thingamajig Y.  First, you'd think that similarity to awesomeness would just engender more awesome.  Second, if X really has something about it that is uniquely awesome enough to be declared "awesome," then its awesomeness deserves to be considered on its own terms sometime.

Don't you know that every 2d retro-styled indie platformer is a Cave Story rip-off?  It's in the internet rules.

Actually, from the Spelunky Read me:

The game takes INSPIRATION from many things, including Spelunker (NES), La
Mulana (http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana), Balding's Quest
(http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=46.0), Aztec (Apple II), Nethack

Eheh, just saying. It would be a shame is some unsuspecting person got them mixed up and thought of Spelunky as a Cave Story ripoff.

Yes it would, but they would have to be seriously convinced somehow, and probably would have never played Spelunky. I think the only thing that could be considered that would be The Underside. But even that is more of a mix of classic 8-bit inspirations. Obviously Spelunky has much more in common with, well, that other game. (Got yelled at last time I mentioned it)  :'(

I never thought it got very hard, only one boss fight unless you're going for the best ending.

I still haven't defeated the "Best Ending..." I keep dying over and over... Like "Spelunky..."

yea, medium hard if your going the easy way, but very difficult if you go for the best ending.

Yeah, ditto here. You must be very precise in the last leg of the game. One thing I really don't like in games is the requirement to memorize an area to have any chance of finishing. Though, I guess if you had god-like powers of reaction you could get through on one try. So, Eguee, how long did it take you?

The Sacred Grounds are tough... But what I dislike more are the tiny details that are required to get there. Most of them are so incredibly random and have little to no explanation as to way it ultimately changes your course, that I had to eventually give in and locate a walkthrough.
However, other than that small gripe, I really love "Cave Story." :D

There should be a cross over game between Pixel and Derek-Yu. It could be called Spelunky Story! we could even get La-Mulana into the mix and call it Spelunky Story-Mulana!

I'm just taking a frustratingly hard game, putting robots and Mimigas in it, and making it 10X more frustratingly hard. All 3 games in one!

I utterly adore this game. Odd that it isn't refered to as a metroidvania more often, It doesn't have that much of an open layout but its still probably one of the greatest examples of the genre outside of, y'know, Metroid or Castlevania.

And yes, i'm soooo sick of people saying that everything has ripped off cave story in the indie world, even The Underside is unique enough to not be called a rip off in my eyes.

Finally, somebody sees it the way I do!

Title: Re: Doukutsu Monogatari

It's more directly like Metroid alone than Metroidvania, especially the health upgrades.
And I have to admit, seeing Underside the first time I really thought it was just a CS hack. The HUD, combat, and play style are quite similar. It wasn't until I played through the demo I saw it's uniqueness, and it is quite good. I still think it's funny though, that he used Pixtone for the music.

Speaking of CS ripoffs, I tried to make a Knytt Stories level using Cave Story tiles. It uh.. wasn't well received.

AAH, everytime Cave Story is written as 'CS' I read it as Counter-Strike. And I haaatteee Counter-Strike!

(well largely just the community and the map rotation, the game itself is pretty ace)

Me, being the nerd that I am, would've thought Dungeon Master.
