Title: A simple way to make each of the characters interesting
Post by: JLrep on October 08, 2009, 03:56:20 PM
I was pretty shocked when I unlocked the Tunnel Man; infinite mattock? An only slightly-less-useful-than-Spelunker's attack? He is far and away a simply better choice for getting money, doing a speedrun, some of the challenges...

How about this: the game records different high scores for each of the characters. On top of this, something could be done to the Damsel character to make her different from the others; for instance, she could have no weapon. In this way the game would immediately have three different difficulties built right in: Easy (Tunnel Man) Medium (Spelunker) and Hard (Damsel). The different sets of high scores would prevent people from just ignoring the weaker character(s).

My reasoning is, even if you start adding little changes here and there—making the Tunnel Man start with no ropes or bombs, or making him take more damage, or whatever—the changes are eventually going to feel too arbitrary, and no matter what, with long playing one character will still likely turn out to be superior to the other, and thus the other will simply be ignored.

Does this seem like a reasonable idea?

+1 internet for you, my friend... Now all I have to do is UNLOCK another character  :P

That's actually a pretty good suggestion. Props to you.

That's not a bad idea, but I dunno about the damsel being a straight downgrade.  Maybe make her run faster and not take falling damage in exchange for no weapon.

Not take falling damage = Ice Cave Pwn.

But she doesn't take falling damage when you throw her right? So that would fit. Maybe better to give her a "floaty" jump like the Princess in Mario 2. You could activate it the same way as the cape and float for a limited time or something along those lines.

Well of course, she also runs slowly and can't jump, so I don't know how true to her NPC characteristics we want to cleave.  ;D

The whip should be replaced by a kiss of death. Just saying.

Arrows do only one damage to you (as Damsel)

Title: Re: A simple way to make each of the characters interesting

You should be able to run through enemies. That would be awesome.

Even the ghost. Because the ghost won't appear. Because the ghost is looking for the Spelunker.

But won't he still appear in some levels?

The only one I would recall would be if you grab the crystal skull. Then it's okay, because then on he's looking for you.

I mean, won't the spelunker still appear in some levels?

Okay, then he kills the spelunker.

That reminds me, what happens when the ghost hits the Spelunker? He turns into powder?

He spontaneously combusts.

I know: as the Damsel, you have the normal weaponry, don't take as much damage, shopkeepers are kinder to you, and you can't get killed by the ghost.

But every now and then, Spelunker grabs you and either carries you to the end of the level or sacrifices you to get himself some spring boots.

Hah! That'd be pretty cool. He knocks you out and carries you to the idol, then you implode.  ;D

Then you'll have to shotgun him before he gets to you.

Or run into spikes.

Title: Re: A simple way to make each of the characters interesting
Post by: Hayden on October 10, 2009, 05:02:57 AM
But if you were to play as the damsel and have spelunkers running around, then wouldn't it make no sense for there being a trapped spelunker somewhere screaming "HELP"? Who would pucker up his manly lips to give you another life THEN, huh? ;P

Just pointing it out, not arguing.

Title: Re: A simple way to make each of the characters interesting
Post by: Arucard on October 10, 2009, 05:07:05 AM
OK, combining ideas:
-kiss of death rather than whip
-lonely shopkeepers give you a discount
-ghost only attacks you if carrying Dave ( or crystal skull)
-"floaty" jump with dress acting as cape
To balance out the overpowering stats above:
-knock-out animation lasts longer
-shorter jump/run time
 ???

A drawback should be that she can only gain health by using the kapala.

The spelunker idea should be used in place of the ghost for the damsel.

Arrows do only one damage to you instead of two (as Damsel)
As that is how it works when you're the Spelunker.

How about if you're standing by a wall, suddenly some new walls will appear, trapping you in the wall?

Or as the damsel you can never stop running in hysterical panic.

That'd be a real challenge for most of us. I like it.

The spelunker idea should be used in place of the ghost for the damsel.

Ha ha ha!  That's clever!

If there's a tunnel man, then shouldn't there be a tunnel woman?

That's why he's always in the tunnel, not at home.

Sorry, had to go there.

OOOH! Burn! *hi-five!*

That's like asking why there isn't a spelunkess.

That is why the spelunker goes down into that cavern anyway.  He's trying to get  enough money in order to divorce her.

She'll still take half of it anyway.

Define "wife."

A female spouse.

I think the spelunker's father's last words were, "Don't screw up and die humiliatingly like your other 2872 identical siblings."

It would work.

Not until you use links for super-sized images. Every time you use one, a damsel dies in your arms.
