Yep. There is NO way. Or at least in my knowledge. And even if there was, I think that's kind've against the point of the gameplay.
Spelunky is a mix between a "Platformer" and a "Rouge-like." As a result, elements of both obviously appear, and one such element would be the "Permanent Death" Concept from "Rouge-likes."

Starting over and over again is the point. This isn't some 5-day long game like the FF series. You could beat it in less than an hour, but you'd have to play non-stop, bceause there are no checkpoints.

The shortcuts pretty much function as checkpoints, don't they?

Kinda, but you don't save:
  • Items
  • gold
  • kills
  • time

You don't save saves either.
And you lock yourself out of a CoG run.

And there's eguee with the one-upper. <3

Anyways, yeah. it's basically a teleporting thing, not too much of a checkpoint.

And . . . here's another thread where I've shown up too late to have anything original to say.  I feel so slow.

But yeah, my deal is that I don't know how someone could even use a game save feature in a worthwhile way.  There's almost nothing you accomplish that takes more than a few minutes and that you'd need to resume at some other date.  Even if I were proudly on my way to the City of Gold when I died, it would have been something like 10-20 minutes that I could always re-play, and probably enjoy re-playing differently.

You don't save saves either.
And you lock yourself out of a CoG run.

All of that is true, but I'm assuming the original poster, as a beginner, is mainly concerned with winning the game--beating the boss and riding off through the desert--and less concerned with completing the challenges and other side-quests.

Well, everything is much easier when you've gone through the whole game, and besides: He's going to have to access the areas MORE than once to get the shortcuts open.

The only save system that seems appropriate would be an old-school, roguelike save system. One that immediately exits the game, and maybe only possible in the level transitions. The difference being, classic roguelikes are much longer than Spelunky which, as stated above, can be completed in one sitting. The shortcuts are more of a way to practice later areas than have a quick way to finish the game, though they can do that too. Starting over can be annoying, but it's the way to familiarize yourself with the early areas so you can plow through them later. Just keep it up and soon you won't need a save point or a shortcut.

Note that the aforementioned strategy will take you a few hundred deaths in each area before you can successfully plow through an area without getting hit.

I think every strategy will take a few hundred deaths to get anywhere near completing Spelunky.

Or even getting used to it.

Drat, the level transition save-and-quit was something I was going to comment on. In my case, I'm more of an explorer than a speed-runner (yeah, can't see myself getting that time challenge aaaaaanytime soon), and have thought that a way to "pause" the game to come back to later would be a good idea. Of course, then there are the people who back up the "temporary" save, and there you have it, point defeated. So I say it's good as it is.

And...
