Title: Enemy most associated with Spelunky.
Post by: Sparkle on October 20, 2010, 05:33:33 PM
well, I think that the enemy that is like most associated (original, reminder of Spelunky, etc.) with Spelunky is probably the ManTraps, Shopkeepers, or the Yetis.

Specify if your enemy is not on the list (:

P.S. I'm only listing the like insert adjective I can't think of enemies. sorry, but I don't want the pol to be what this whole page should look like xD

Id have to say the two most unique enemies are what I think of most, not too many games have Killer Shopkeepers and Giant Idols that stomp on you

Unless youre playing Zelda (well idk if they ever STOMPED..)

Otherwise bats snakes and hawkmen haha I wrote kawkmen by accident at first, also kudos if anyone sees this

It's those demonic spiders, man.  Haunting my games...haunting my dreams...

Yea just plain ol' spiders for me. I may have mastered them now, but I hated them SOOO much in the beginning. My hate for spiders is even starting to spread to other games thanks to Spelunky!

I can agree abou them TOTALLY sucking xD but, I still think shopkeepers are the most fun to play with ;D That's why I have them as my choice (:

Lessee here, ah yes
Quote from: TvTropes
Demonic Spiders - Those yetis. Those chain-throwing, whip-invulnerable, blue-nippled yetis...
  • The actual spiders, whose unpredictable jump patterns make them some of the most dangerous enemies in the game.
  • And cultists who throw you around the same way as yetis. They also jump around very fast. At least they're vulnerable to your whip.
  • Perhaps the most unexpectedly deadly enemy in video-game history (barring the carp): Frogs. Completely unpredictable jump patterns and timing, inexplicable ability to predict your next movement, and quick vertical movements that make them difficult to take down with the whip. You will die by frog at some point.
Goddamned Bats - Almost every enemy in the game. There's goddamned spiders, goddamned yetis, goddamned cavemen, goddamned frogs, and so on. Ironically, the bats are among the least annoying enemies due to their slow speed and predictability.

The Goomba - As mentioned above, the snake. All it does is slither slowly back and forth. It is perhaps the only enemy that does not actively respond to your presence or do anything to kill you besides continue its regular movement pattern.

I heard Demonic Spiders and had to quote some of the big enemy related tropes, idk what use that has but hi[/list]

Shopkeepers. There arenīt many old man with super-high-jump-abilities and shotgun in videogames.... and the frog , which I absolutely hate- I alway lose when I encounter them.

I do agree the frog is of hell, but they don't really associate that much to me.

Shoppy all the way. He, more than anything else in the game, best represents the risk/reward analysis that lies at Spelunky's heart -- do you ignore his shop completely, saving your money for something better down the line? Do you buy an item, increasing your chances of making it farther in the game but possibly screwing yourself out of the Ankh? Do you steal what you want, dodge both that Shopkeeper and the one waiting for you at the end of the next level, and play it safe from then on out? Or do you go for broke, kill the bastard, steal everything, and spend the rest of the game as a wanted man?

How you deal with Shoppy pretty much sets the tone for the entire game.

    Jiang Shi.

Whenever I think of short, blue-skinned zombies wearing royal chinese robes, either Spelunky comes to mind, or Super Mario Land.

They are indeed in SML. While they might not have had the color-set at the time, I read a few SML FAQ's, and they confirmed that the short, jumping zombies (with ponytails aswell if I recall correctly), where indeed Jiang Shi.

Is DarkStalkers a good game? I've heard alot about it.

Ah, that's right!  They're in the extremely forgettable Game Boy Mario game 'Super Mario Land', as the post before said.  You could squish them, but they get back up a few moments later!  Truly a terrifying foe. :o

Darkstalkers is pretty rad, but if you're in the mood to beat up some Jiang-Shi you really need to try Phantom Fighter on the NES. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCKHHvqTDO0)

    No...

Dry Bones first appeared in SMB3, which was released in Japan in 1988.
Jiang Shi first appeared in SML, which was released in Japan in 1989.

    Sorry mate.  ;D

By the way, heh, maybe Sparkle should make a new poll?

Hah. Maybe. are you able to take your vote back and revote? I dunno.
and I never really liked the Super Mario Bros. Games. I only really liked Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario World, and That was pretty much it. I haven't gotten to play Yoshis Island yet, so I can't say for that, but still, I could just never really get in to the older Mario games for the most part.
