Title: Spelunking - A Guide - #6: Conspicuous invincibility of items?
Post by: ipwnu1337 on August 17, 2010, 11:47:55 AM
Spelunkying: A Guide!
This is a comic based around the journal of a spelunker who, unsurprisingly, ventures into the cave we are all to familiar with.

If you like this comic, please comment on it.  Ask me questions, I'll be happy to answer.

Comments and criticism are appreciated, acknowledged, and encouraged.

I'm really just testing out a drawing pad I got a little while ago.

I just fixed the second page, photobucket did something stupid and left something uploaded when I was going to remove it.

Ten brownie points to anyone who can find out 1 (out of 2) book references in this comic.  That and I'll stick you somewhere in the comic for one page.

(Note that these references are very, very vague.)

Title: Re: Spelunking - A Guide #3 This doesn't make any sense.

Comic #3 is out! (http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac217/OreliusOwl/SpelunkingAGuide3.png)

I'm really just going to complaining about things that don't make sense in spelunky.

Isn't that the whole point?

Of course!  What else could I write about?

Many, many things.

Still, I like the way the lines look like sketches, gives it a loose, organic feeling when on the brown paper backdrop. I think it's unnecessary and distracting to have the frayed edges, especially when not all the sides have it.

I rather like the frayed edges.  Considering it's from Spelunker's old personal log, it gives it that rustic feel.  And of course not ALL the edges would be frayed; they're from different parts of the book.

#4 - What the hell why do these things bleed so much. (http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac217/OreliusOwl/SpelunkingAGuide4.png)

It's out!  I found some great brushsets for bloodsplatters and fingerprints.
If it's too difficult to read tell me, and I'll post one without all the blood.

So yeah, it's never made sense why snakes, spiders, and purple(!) bats bleed tennis ball-sized droplets of blood.

Totally dig your guide... I wrote a somewhat similar in some ways, but text only guide for the Wiki called How To Die: A Breezy Beginner's Guide to Spelunky (http://How To Die: A Breezy Beginner's Guide to Spelunky).  Maybe we should make a "guides to spelunky" section on the wiki.

Eh, your link doesn't lead anywhere.
And to clarify, this isn't really a guide, it's more of a comic, but it guess it can go both ways.

[EDIT] Here's a revised version of page 4.  I realized that the extra blood splatters really weren't necessary. (http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac217/OreliusOwl/SpelunkingAGuide4revised.png)

I only found a reference to "A Space Odyssey" and it certainly wasn't vague.

Actually, the references I mentioned in that post has nothing to do with that page or any after that.  Don't worry, you'll never find it.  I'm certainly not expecting anyone to.

If anyone has suggestions, I'd be glad to take them.  I'm actually starting to run dry at the moment.

#4 has been revised again. (http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac217/OreliusOwl/SpelunkingAGuide4revisedagain.png)

Aaaaaand #5! (http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac217/OreliusOwl/SpelunkingAGuide5.png)

It's about the giant spider, which obviously shocked you quite a bit the first time you encountered one.  You ran away, amirite?

It's also about the snake pit.  Have you ever fallen in one accidentally?  Doesn't it SUCK?

Also, each comic so far, except #4, have references.  Be the first one to point them out and win a prize.  The prize being some time in the comic.

In addition, i've decided to upgrade the bland stick figure art to bland stick figure art that replaces the torso with a box.  Enjoy.

I do like this, but you could slow down the pace a bit I think. thats just what I think.

Zerg Rush? Starcraft Much?

Still can't figure many of the references, though I get the feeling the opening is close to one.

Besides the MGS "Snake? Snake! SNAAAAAAKE!!!" reference, that one is obvious.

EDIT: And the cover looks similar to the Ultimate Zombie Survival guide.

Well, you nailed it!

So how will you want to be incorporated into the comic?  Just pm me with it and I'll get it done.

Awfully sorry for the lack of update, but I've been busy with Alien Swarm (http://www.alienswarm.com) for the past few days.  Game is great!

In short, it's a bird's eye view co-operative shooter.  That is on Steam.  And is also free, no strings attached.
Anyway, back to the comic.

#6! Conspicuous invincibility of items? (http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac217/OreliusOwl/SpelunkingAGuide7.png)

Soo, not much going on right now.  Not much to be funny, and no references either.  Move along, move along.  This is really just a filler strip since I didn't feel like drawing more =\.

I enjoy this :) and they're nice and short, so readable in a good like minute and a half :D

-I don't like reading much, so the shorter, the better.
