Title: Spelunky Level Database
Post by: TyrOvC on July 03, 2010, 11:00:50 PM
A group of forum topics with levels hosted by free file hosting sites is not an easy nor quick way to find and download quality levels! I've therefore decided to create an unofficial Spelunky Level Database website. The levels are all hosted on my server, and I am planning on adding various search and sorting parameters to the database.

Currently, anyone can submit levels to it through the automatic form. I'll eventually add user accounts, and levels will be tied to that user account, allowing for editing and updating, etc. I'm also planning on adding the ability to comment on each level, screenshots, and maybe ratings (but ratings always turn out to be useless at best, harmful at worst which is why I'm only thinking of adding them). The current shell of a website is only an hours worth of work, but the main thing for now is that levels can be submitted. I'll be steadily adding features as I see fit, and as requested.
Ready for registering accounts, uploading levels, and commenting!

That said, if anyone here would like to help with creating some Spelunky themed graphics for the website, go ahead! While I will eventually make the whole website prettier, graphics are not my strong suit.

http://spelunkylevels.tyr-net.net/

Progress Update:
User Accounts added
Commenting added
Level Authorship is tied to user accounts
Prettier layout with a random background
Screenshots added
Search Functionality added to level list
Editing your own levels added

Wow! Cool! This could get epic...

Title: Spelunky Level Database Update
Post by: TyrOvC on July 04, 2010, 12:39:46 PM
I have added in user accounts (level submissions are now tied to them, although I haven't added in editing levels yet), and commenting on levels!

Also, in the near future, I would like to have a couple of moderators for the database, for comments and removal of bad submissions and such.

Edit:
If I set up a separate level submit form to do so, is there anyone here willing to go through and add old levels from people who are not around anymore? (I wouldn't know who falls under that category, and I would prefer for people to choose to add their own levels. I do want to include as many levels as possible in the database though, and people who have moved on aren't going to.)

Hey, it's fully ready for people to register and upload their own levels now!

All that's missing are proper search/sort functions for the level list, and editing your own levels later, but I'll get around to adding that.

You should try to get Derek's permission to make it the official website. And someone should post the link somewhere on the spelunky wikia page. (If its not already)

So, awesome work, this will be helpful. :)

Also, this should be stickied. :D

Added one of my levels, but it says "File Upload Error" when I try to upload something :/

Should I add my 50 level set?

Title: Re: Spelunky Level Database

Sure, why not?

I still can't upload anything else right now though  :-\

Whoops, sorry! There was a bug that made screen shots non-optional, which was why it was saying "File Upload Error", but it's working properly now.

And go ahead, upload any of your levels you want to. It needs an obscenely long level set!

Oh goody! Uploading some levels now...

[EDIT] Great job, I must say Overlord! But now I need to edit something...

Okay, editing already submitted levels is partially functional. Click on Manage Levels in the navigation bar to get a list of your levels, and links to edit them with.

When I say partially functional, I mean I haven't added in changing level names yet, because there's some more stuff I'm going to have to code to make sure changing level names doesn't cause any problems in the future.

Website down  :'( (yah yah I know because of the host server)

Post by: TyrOvC on July 18, 2010, 11:16:45 AM
Update on that, full backup of the server is being performed and will be done in a couple of hours.  The server's scheduled for a wipe and upgrade tomorrow, after which the website will be back up.

Title: Spelunky Level Database back up!
Post by: TyrOvC on July 23, 2010, 07:32:34 PM
Sorry about the downtime!  There were some nameserver issues I had to take care of after the server upgrade, and I've spent a couple of days in a place without a constant internet connection.

So, you can now expect the site to perform faster and have better uptime!

Edit:
Also, I figure I might as well, hosting of Spelunky mods is now available upon request.

Edit2:
Also, I think there was about half a day of space between when my final backup of the website was completed and when the server was actually completely offline for the upgrade.  What little activity there was during that time is gone now! (I think there was one comment and one new user that now no longer exist.) Sorry about that!

That's good news!  I think I'll join this and start adding stuff tomorrow...

EDIT: Okay, I added all my old stuff in there!  I didn't put up TLSMV yet, though, because I need to fix up a few things in it.  I'll teach YOU to break my sequence...

I promise this is going to stay up guys.  I get alerts when any of my websites go down, so even if I seem to move on.  ;)

And I still need to try that, once I get my new hard drive (for christmas :'D), get a hang on  to how TLS works (cause it always confused me xD), and download it :3

Darn dot.tk registry canceled the domain for copyright infrigement.

I'm buying a real domain for it :P and I'll reregister the old one as soon as it lets me so old links won't break.

Should be accessible by now. Had to wait a while for the DNS to propagate. Sorry about the downtime!

I've added all 6 of my levels to it, including the colossally long Pteri Puzzle World 2.

Anybody interested in the source code for this? Might be useful if you ever run into another small indie game with a level editor that you like.

So it turns out that whole dot.tk thing is a exploitable profit driven business (who knew?) that let one of those search and add landing page conglomerate things buy the domain for this event though it was still registered by me and whatnot. I can't buy it back to fix the links since I hadn't ever actually payed for it.
In the meantime the site can be accessed at http://gameovergamesproductions.tk/www.spelunkylevels.tk/
Guess I should probably actually buy a domain for it. Sorry that all the links are broken!

Took a while, but I actually managed to get things cleared out with the dot.tk support, and it should be back up under the old domain as soon as the DNS propagates.  :)

Noting it here just in case anyone comes looking. I'm in the process of moving most of my smaller websites to a new VPS, so the database will have some downtime today/tomorrow.

Edit: Finished

I think it trips over certain characters in the description. Try leaving the description blank (or super short). You can edit it afterwards.

Should be fixed. I was tightening some webserver security last night, and messed up the file uploads in the process.

Thanks, but I still can't download electrons newest level, though it works fine with other levels. At first, I thought it's because of some remaining stuff in my browser, so I cleared the cache and tried it again, but that didn't fix the problem. Strange...

I seem to recall having trouble with Electron's levels when there are special or unusual characters/symbols in the title.

Title: Re: Spelunky Level Database
Post by: TyrOvC on November 07, 2012, 04:50:28 PM
Looks like when Electron submitted the level, I hadn't fixed permissions on the downloads folder yet, and so the file didn't actually get saved. Need him to reupload it.

I seem to recall having trouble with Electron's levels when there are special or unusual characters/symbols in the title.
There was once indeed a bug there, but I fixed it a while back.

Edit:
I Put up the website code its not the prettiest in the world on  https://github.com/tyrovc/spelunkyleveldatabase if anyone's interested in it.

When I reupload it, I can see this text :
"You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'm sorry for the disappointment.',difficulty='0',length='11',download='Halloween ' at line 1"
...
I can't send.

This seems to be offline again. I guess it's a problem with the .tk domain, those seem really finicky.

Title: Re: Spelunky Level Database
Post by: TyrOvC on April 07, 2013, 01:34:17 PM
The domain got reported for copyright infringement or abuse or something by a troll, so it might be another week before its back up on spelunkylevels.tk. This happened once before, and it took two weeks to resolve, so guessing off that.

Yeah, I've found out over the course of its lifetime that .tk is totally not worth it, for the tiny amount of money saved.  If I could, I would go back and change everyone's links :/

In the meantime, it can also be accessed at http://spelunkylevels.tyr-net.net/

I probably ought to do a 302 redirect to spelunkylevels.com or something to preserve seo once I get the .tk domain again, then just have everyone start using that.

I noticed someone comment about having trouble signing up for this, and thought I'd check it out. Sure enough the CAPTCHA seems to be broken. I guess this was side effect of changing domains or something.

hey, wouldn't it be usefull if user rating was added to levels entries ??

Title: Re: Spelunky Level Database

I don't think any sort of arbitrary five point rating scale would be worth anything, but maybe there's enough traffic for a "+1 button" rating system to be something someone would appreciate.

Title: Re: Spelunky Level Database
Post by: flap on October 17, 2013, 04:52:37 AM
Why not. As a casual player, I really fell that any kind of information about the mod quality could be worth it.
If it is not too difficult to implement it could be worth a try...
An alternative solution could be to display the number of downloads : if it is not perfect for assessing quality, it will at least inform whether people got interrested from the forum discussions...
