Title: Robbing the Black Market
Post by: AresRomanGod on September 18, 2009, 03:03:26 AM
Well, while jumping on some explosive frogs, it so happened that one blew up the entrance to the black market. I thought to myself "Why not?" But I felt really hesitant. As soon as I stepped out I see 3 shopkeepers bumrushing me, and filling me up with lead. "Huh, guess it didn't wear off." A few 20 tries later, it happened again. I didn't have a mark on me, so I jumped straight in with a Jetpack that I bought.

This is where the fun starts.

Saw that one shopkeeper had a shotgun in his store. Decided to nab it, shoot him in the face, and then jetpack up. I then ran out of fuel, but bounced on a caveman, which knocked a shopkeeper into a man-eating plant. The ankh keeper was bombed 3 or 4 times out of pure spite, then I off-screen shot the hell out of the rest of them. I felt really proud of myself. That is, until after the CoG, where I got my face bashed into the ground by a golden statue.

So, have you ever robbed the Black Market? With what, and how?

I almost ALWAYS rob the black market, unless I'm so rolling in the dough I can buy everything I need. Ultimately its pretty easy, hunt for a guy with a shotgun, or just toss a bomb last second into a shopkeepers face (hint it's even funnier when its a sticky bomb) then just take your time clear out the top two levels of shopkeepers and then bomb down from the ankh store to the exit.

I've tried a couple of times and nearly succeeded too but generally end up dying REALLY stupidly just before I get them all. Eg: accidentally falling into the pit dug out from bombs that they're all in...

I have yet to perfect the art of telefragging. I usually just teleport one square in front of them, then get my face blasted about 20 squares back again.

It's too tempting not to go, especially when I'm trying to do a  :spl-dams: rescue run, I see that Eye, I see the Entrance, I want to go a LOT but shouldn't. Because of  :spl-shop:. =( so many goodies, without spending  :spl-gold:!

Hey, that got me thinking, how about making shopkeepers go blind when you hit them with flares? They would just run around.
How about them having heart attacks when bombs go off nearby?

I have never gone to the black marker and not fought the shopkeepers.

There's almost certainly going to be a gun you can use lying around (and if not there'll be plenty of bombs to help you acquire one), and the old "shoot from off screen" strategy is really effective.  I know it's lame, but the black market is the point in the game where my character has a good shot of making it, and I start playing conservatively there.

You don't always have to rob the black market.

I once got a crystal skull before the black market.  I bought the Ankh *AND* a jetpack.

I like to climb down the left side and fire buckshot into each row of shops before I alert any of them to my presence.  You can kill 5 of the 7(8 assuming there's one at the exit) shopkeepers without ever putting yourself in danger.  And you'll probably find at the very least a few ropes there if you're unable to climb back up with ladders or anything.

well, if you always bomb the exits and entrances in area 2 you've sortof got a chance of getting it; they have a higher chance of spawning there then anywhere else it appears...

Well, considering you can't get to the City of Gold without getting to the Black Market, and you can't reliably access the Black Market without the Udjat Eye, then of COURSE you're going to have to find it inadvertantly!

The first few times you get to the black market, you probably shouldn't consider robbing it.

If your attitude is "Wow!  I made it to the black market!", then you shouldn't rob it.

If your attitude is "Ho hum.  I made it to the black market again.  Darn, I can't afford the ankh.", then you should consider robbing it.

If I already have a pistol or shotgun, and am having a bad game, then I rob the black market.  Otherwise, I just buy what I can and try to win.  I'm not that experienced yet.

Robbing the Black Market is easy. Hell, robbing the Black Market, killing every shopkeeper, and leaving with the Ankh is easy.

It's doing it in less than 2:30 that's the hard part.

That said, I always rob the black market.

How do you deal with the angry shopkeepers that spawn at every level exit?  This seems to be the biggest downside of robbing the black market.  Those end-of-level angry shopkeepers always get me.

Easy. Resist the urge to steal until the black market. Then just get so damn lucky that the last jungle level is the jaws one, and hope he jumps into the water.

Well, you've always got a buttload of bombs and a jar of Bomb Paste once you're done raiding the black market, right?

Just chuck instant kill spheres.

Or use your Shotgun. Fighting an Exit Shopkeeper is the same as any other shopkeeper.

Just to prove my point, I'll start up a round of Spelunky, make it to the Black Market on my first try, kill all eight Shopkeepers, and leave with the Ankh, then I'll go on to beat the game for the first time.

Well that didn't go as planned. Shit.

Actually, I had my ass handed to me on a silver platter by a Shopkeeper in the Black Market. >_>

I'd gone through levels 1 through 7 with only one hitch - took one hitpoint damage. Saved four damsels. Blasted all Exit Shopkeepers in the face with the shotgun. Got REALLY FLIPPIN' LUCKY and hit a man-eating plant with a thrown Golden Idol that was residing in the frozen zone - I'd chucked a damsel into the same area immediately after.

Then I cleaned out the top layer of shops, watched the shopkeepers run around down below and offscreen, jumped down, popped one of them while he was in the frozen zone, then the other one just refused to get hit by my shotgun blasts. He came up, chucked me for one damage, I tried to get up and GTFO, he point-blank shotguns me.

From 7 HP to 0 HP in two seconds.

I thought the contest was "Rob the first shop that spawns in the game, preferably on level two.  Rob the black market, killing all 7 shopkeepers plus the exit shopkeeper.  Kill the end-of-level shopkeeper on every level.  Kill any other shopkeepers that spawn in shops.  Win the game.  Bonus points if you make it to the CoG.  Negative points if you exit the level but don't kill the exit shopkeeper."

What's the maximum number of shops that can spawn in the game?  Can you get one on every level 2..15, or is there a lower limit?

Title: Re: Robbing the Black Market
Post by: Marty on September 29, 2009, 08:06:33 PM
The other day I tried to rob the ankh salesman. There happened to be a man-eating plant on the ground above him, so I knocked it out, set it on the floor of his shop, and picked up the ankh like I was about to buy it. (When you do this, the shopkeeper will walk over to you, making it more likely that he will eventually get eaten.) I knew that he would soon burst out of the flower, so I ran. I noticed that I automatically picked up bombs from the other stores in the black market, and none of the other shopkeepers tried to chase me! Unfortunately I either died in some stupid way not long after, or got hit by the aggro'd dude's shotgun after he burst from the plant's belly.

It's a random chance. You could get one after another for several levels, or never see any at all, just like for damsels. I don't know if it's possible to get a shop on every level or on zero levels (I usually die before I can find out though).

The game is unbeatable without shops, isn't it? Or at least when I try. Every game that I've had without shops, I've only made it so far until I'm stuck somewhere and the ghost has to come to kill me.

i'm pretty sure you can do it. Thinking about it on successful runs i tend to only use bombs and ropes to get crates, rarely needing them to get out of impossible situations - all of which were avoidable.

Uh, hang on: are you asking whether the game is unbeatable without shops, or without the items that you can get from shops-or-crates-or-solid-rock-itself?  Because certainly you don't need shops in order to get lucky and find super-powered whatsits.  And even beyond that, as noted, some people will take it as a challenge to get through the game without using items.  Sure you could do it.

(And, as long as I'm on this subject: the Sceptre doesn't come from a shop, and getting it almost assures that a final-shortcut-run of mine ends in winning the game.)

The Scepter is weak because it targets corpses.

The Shotgun is weak because it doesn't shoot through walls.

The Boomerang is weak because it doesn't do much damage.

And corpses aren't a problem. Just make sure to group all of the enemies into one small place.

The Boomerang wouldn't be able to go through a wall on the outward movement.

It also would cause the Shopkeeper to go aggro the moment it picks up one of their items.

It should kill minor enemies (bats, snakes, small spiders, frogs, piranhas) and steal the skull from skeletons. It should stun all stunnable enemies, dealing 1 damage to the man-eating plant. It should just make a "clink" sound Zelda style, then return, when it hits a miniboss, the Cultist, or a UFO.

well, maybe you should only be able to throw it directly forwards, and it behaves with collision then, once it hits its max range, it comes back ignoring collision. You'd have to be pretty lucky or skillful to properly get shopkeeps with that.

Bomb Arrows have been known for ages.

They're a waste of use.

Bomb arrows? I'm oblivious right now. Still not comprehending.

They're a good source of cheap bombs (only takes an arrow). At least, until Derek fixes that.

I used one to blow up one of those altar things with spikes on the side. I didn't want to stand next to it and place a bomb, and throwing it would have bounced it back at me. They have uses like anything else, just in certain circumstances.

There's one bit about the bow that I find annoying.  I can't shoot diagonally upwards.  If I'm carrying an arrow, I can throw diagonally upwards, but I can't use the bow that way.

I never noticed that. Those are like the tiny details, such as the machete backslash and all that. I guess you learn something new every day, huh?
