Title: You've come a long way, baby.
Post by: MagFlare on May 04, 2010, 11:11:33 AM
Spelunky's had quite a few fundamental gameplay changes since its first inception. Which change do you think most improved the game? (Note that I'm just talking about vanilla Spelunky here, rather than any of the community-made mods.)

If I missed anything significant, let me know and I'll add it.

Kali Altars, hands-down.  That was a really unique addition that I wasn't too sure about at first, but it definitely brings some high-risk high-reward stuff to the game.

oh I know! I know! the 2nd area.

what? It wasn't in there in the first version he didn't give out to anyone.

I really wish I could try the really old versons.

Whoops. I completely forgot about one of the earlier and most important changes -- the lowering of all shop prices, which actually made purchasing stuff a viable option.

Apart from that one, though, I've got to agree that the altars were one of the best additions. It introduced a bunch of new playstyles -- the Kapala and the ball and chain are fun new items that drastically change the way you approach the game, and the little "can I get to the altar before this mantrap/yeti/cultist wakes up in my hands?" metagame is a thrill -- and it's a satisfying way to obtain items.
